As much as I love travelling, especially in Asia, I always make sure that I am home for Christmas. In the past three years I got back home at least two weeks before Christmas or left Germany in early January to be able to absorb a bit of the christmassy spirit which fills the cities and places in my home country in the weeks before the feast.
Yes, cities like Hongkong, Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and others are festively decorated as well and Christmas songs are played everywhere, but for me it is not the same. I am very modern, emancipated and unconventional, but when it comes to Christmas I am quite traditional.
I know and understand that others might think differently, but I love the the Christmassy atmosphere and the Christmas decoration in the streets all over. I love the Christmas markets in my hometown Cologne, especially the one on the Roncalli place right next to the “Kölner Dom”, the Cologne Cathedral. I really like to buy Christmas presents for my boyfriend and my family. I highly enjoy to drink Christmas coffees and teas and to bake Christmas cookies myself. But most important for me is to spend the Christmas Eve and the following two days, which are public holidays in Germany, together with my family.
What about you? Do you celebrate Christmas? How do you spend these days? Where will you be this year?
No matter where you are and what you are going to do:
Merry Christmas, everyone!
