The air is crisp and cold. It is still dark when I step out of my hotel room at 5 A.M. We take a private minibus to the banks of the Ganges in Varanasi. Locals are surging down the Ghats to the river.
With a rowing boat we boat onto the Ganges. The buildings along the river are still illuminated. On the Ganga are other boats like ours and we all witness the sky changing colors and the sun rise slowly over the river. People are standing on a sandbank, watching us. When it gets brighter, locals appear along the Ghats, start their ritual washings and take a dip into the Ganges.
What a spiritual way to start the day. Good morning, Varanasi!
