We spent two days at the Kinabatangan Jungle Camp and did two afternoon, one early morning and one night cruise on the Kinabatangan River, which is famous for its wildlife, in those days. We saw Pygmy Elephants already on our first afternoon cruise but encountered this Elephant Family on the second afternoon cruise. They weren’t shy but very curious and we got the chance to get real close. The Elephant baby was first hidden by the two adult Elephants but then he pushed himself in front. When he suddenly lifted his trunk, it seemed as if he wanted to say hi to us.
The Kinabatangan River is 560 kilometres long and thereby the biggest river in the federal state Sabah, Borneo. It arises in the highlands in the center of Sabah and flows to its mouth into the Sulu Sea. In the lowland it forms a 4000 square kilometres big flooded area, 26.000 hectares of it are called “Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary which is a protected area.
